LINEAR
Linear is calm, minimal, and all about natural movement. Defined by soft, sweeping strokes, layers of texture, and intentional negative space. It’s about creating balance without overworking.
A few marks go a long way.

Tips & Techniques
Canvas practice makes perfect
Within each kit comes a series of practice pieces for you to see how the paints and tools feel on the surface of the canvas. This also allows you to try different colour combinations and techniques before committing to your canvas
Let the canvas speak
Don’t feel the need to cover every inch. Leaving parts of the canvas bare creates contrast and breathing room — it’s part of the artwork, not a missing piece. Step back often and see how the negative space balances the rest.
Brush direction matters
Brushwork in this style is often clean, flowing and deliberate, like wind passing through. Experiment with long, soft strokes in one direction. You can use the flat brush for wider sweeps, or a dry brush for broken, textured marks that echo natural movement.
Layer slowly
Linear works well with subtle depth. Let each layer dry before adding more, this prevents unwanted blending and keeps your colours crisp. You can build contrast this way too: a sharp dark stroke layered over something soft can create a beautiful focal point.
Use the palette knife for control
The palette knife in your kit has a sharp, pointed blade, perfect for fine, precise marks. Use it to apply paint in smooth sweeps or to scrape back areas for texture and contrast. Try dragging the edge lightly across the canvas for subtle lines, or use the flat side to spread paint with more resistance than a brush. It works best with thicker paint, and you’ll quickly get a feel for the pressure. Go slow and experiment.
Break it up
Not everything has to be big and bold. Try adding small gestures — flicks, soft lines, or tiny marks — in between larger movements. This adds rhythm and gives your composition a sense of quiet detail that keeps the eye moving.

Inspiration behind Linear
This style is shaped by nature, and our connection to it. From Finnish forests to Scottish hills, it reflects the light, the textures, and the quiet rhythm of the outdoors. Leaves in motion, curving branches, the stillness between sounds.
For us, it’s childhood nature walks, weekend hikes, and a lifelong need to step outside and just breathe.
