Tips & Techniques
Canvas practice makes perfect
Within each kit comes a series of practice pieces for you to see how the paints and tools feel on the surface of the canvas. This also allows you to try different colour combinations and techniques before committing to your canvas
Tape for clean lines
Use the masking tape in your kit to block out bold shapes and sharp edges. Press it down firmly to avoid paint bleeding underneath, and always remove it slowly once the paint is dry to reveal crisp, satisfying lines.
Layer bold over soft
Start with a strong shape, then contrast it with something looser. For example, a block of colour with a sweeping gesture over the top. It’s the tension between control and spontaneity that brings Skift to life.
Mix your own shades
Both palettes include white for a reason, to open up range. Try mixing it with each of your colours to create custom tints and soft contrasts. Even bold work needs softness to breathe.
Flat brushes = clean application
The two flat brushes in this kit are ideal for Skift’s balance of precision and edge. Use the wider one for filling large areas, and the smaller one for more careful shapes or layering. A dry brush can also create beautiful texture if dragged lightly over the canvas.
Use the palette knife for edge or texture
With a bit of pressure, the knife gives you that sharp, graphic application. With less pressure, you get broken edges, natural scraping, and texture. Try adding just a slice of colour, or dragging the knife through a painted edge to disrupt it.
Inspiration behind Skift
This style began in Stockholm, with a feeling of finally finding home.
The city gave me what I was missing, a sense of ease and belonging. There’s something in the light, the buildings, the calm energy of the city and Gamla Stan, that shifted something in me. Skift is that shift.
A meeting point of past and future, structure and softness, old streets and new beginnings. It’s calm, confident and deeply personal.
