Tips & Techniques

Canvas practice makes perfect

Within each kit comes a series of practice pieces for you to see how the paints and tools feel on the surface of the canvas. This also allows you to try different colour combinations and techniques before committing  to your canvas

Mix without fear

You’ve got red, blue, yellow, black, and white — that’s every colour in the world, waiting to be made. Start with two, see what happens. Add white to soften, black to deepen. Layer bold on bold. Let it be messy.

Colour Mix Guide

  • Red + Blue = Purple

  • Blue + Yellow = Green

  • Red + Yellow = Orange

  • All three (Red + Blue + Yellow) = Brown or earthy neutrals

  • Any colour + White = Lighter version (a tint)

  • Any colour + Black = Deeper version (a shade)

There’s no right or wrong. Just mix, adjust, and trust your eye. If it’s a colour you love, it’s a colour worth using.

Small brush, big impact

The small round brush in your kit is great for quick strokes, dots, or details. Try switching grip, using just the tip, or layering one colour on top of another once dry. It’s also great for writing or gestural marks.

Use the flat brush for movement

The flat brush is perfect for bold sweeps, dry-brushed textures, or blending broad colour fields. Load it with paint for dense coverage or use it almost dry for a scratchy, layered look. Keep it loose and let your hand move freely.

Try the palette knife

The palette knife creates sharp edges, scrapes, and smears. Press firmly for thick texture or drag it lightly to break up paint already on the canvas. Use the tip for detail or the full side to spread like butter.

Use what you’ve got

This kit has everything you need, but art doesn’t have to stop there.
Tear off a bit of the cardboard box and use it to scrape paint. Dab with your fingers. Create marks with the handle of your brushes. Vild is about trying. Let your curiosity take the lead.

Inspiration behind Vild

Vild began as a feeling. The freedom of finally doing something for ourselves. It captured the energy we felt when we stopped waiting and started creating. Not for work and not for anyone else, just for us.Vild is creative freedom. The kind where you get to try, play, and experiment without needing permission. It’s freedom to try things, to make a mess, to follow whatever idea you feel like. There’s no wrong way to do this.
