MONOCHROME COTTON

Monochrome Cotton is about timeless simplicity and contrast. Working with black, white and soft beige on cotton canvas shifts the focus away from colour and onto composition, balance and mark-making. Ideal for exploring shape, negative space and confidence: creating work that feels calm, graphic and powerful.

This palette invites you to slow down and be deliberate. Every stroke stands out, and every decision carries weight. On unprimed cotton canvas, the paint absorbs gently, softening edges and giving even bold marks a natural, tactile quality.

PAINTING
TIPS & TECHNIQUES

Use your canvas practice pieces

Spend time getting comfortable with how the paints, brushes and palette knife behave on raw canvas before moving onto your main piece. Try out marks, pressure, colour mixes and compositions freely. This is where confidence builds, without the pressure of committing.

Think in shapes, not details

Monochrome works best when you focus on larger forms rather than small adjustments. Block out shapes and areas of contrast first, then refine only if needed. Simplicity is part of the strength here.

Let negative space lead

The raw cotton canvas is just as important as the paint. Allow empty areas to remain untouched, they give breathing room and help anchor stronger marks without overcrowding the piece.

Vary opacity for depth

Use your paints at different thicknesses to create depth and different textures. Thinned paint feels softer and atmospheric, while thicker applications add structure and presence.

Use palette knives for clean, confident edges

Palette knives are especially effective with monochrome. Use them to create sharp blocks, scraped textures, or imperfect straight lines. Small irregularities add character and prevent the piece from feeling rigid.

Stop earlier than feels comfortable

Monochrome pieces often feel finished sooner than expected. If the composition feels balanced, pause. Overworking can quickly dull the contrast and impact: restraint is key.
