MONOCHROME LINEN

Monochrome Linen is raw, textural and timeless. Using a restrained palette of black, white and beige, this kit shifts the experience through linen’s natural weave and weight. Ideal if you enjoy slowing down, working with material rather than against it, and allowing imperfection to become part of the final piece.

The linen surface adds resistance and character to every mark. Paint sits differently here: strokes feel more deliberate, edges more broken and textures more pronounced. The result is work that feels tactile, architectural and powerful.

PAINTING
TIPS & TECHNIQUES

Use your canvas practice pieces

Spend time getting comfortable with how the paints, brushes and palette knife behave on raw canvas before moving onto your main piece. Try out marks, pressure, colour mixes and compositions freely. This is where confidence builds, without the pressure of committing.

Work slower and with intention

Linen rewards patience. Apply paint more slowly than you might on cotton, letting each mark sit with the surface rather than rushing to fill space. Fewer marks often feel stronger here.

Let texture do the work

The linen weave will naturally break up paint. Instead of smoothing this out, lean into it. Drag paint lightly across the surface so the texture shows through and adds depth without extra effort.

Use thicker paint sparingly

Heavier applications of black or white can create striking contrast on linen, but use them selectively. One strong, weighted area often carries more impact than several smaller ones.

Build structure with masking tape

If you want more defined shapes or cleaner divisions, masking tape can help introduce structure without losing the raw feel. Apply tape lightly to create boundaries or blocks, then paint over and peel back once the surface is touch-dry. The contrast between clean edges and linen texture adds tension and balance.

Allow marks to feel unfinished

Rough edges, broken lines and visible drag marks suit linen beautifully. Resist the urge to clean things up, the honesty of the surface is what gives Monochrome Linen its presence.
