NAVY & BRIGHT
Navy & Bright balances depth with impact. Anchored by deep navy and black, this palette is lifted by bright accents that cut through with energy and contrast. The result is work that feels confident, graphic and expressive, without losing calm.
On raw cotton canvas, darker tones feel rich and grounded, while brighter colours sit sharply on the surface. This contrast makes every mark feel intentional. Navy & Bright works especially well for bold compositions, strong movement and pieces where negative space plays just as important a role as paint.

TIPS & TECHNIQUES
Use your canvas practice pieces
Spend time getting comfortable with how the paints, brushes and palette knife behave on raw canvas before moving onto your main piece. Try out marks, pressure, colour mixes and compositions freely. This is where confidence builds, without the pressure of committing.
Start with the darker foundation
Begin with navy or black to establish depth and structure. These tones ground the composition and make brighter colours feel more intentional when they’re added later.
Use bright colours sparingly
A small amount of bright colour goes a long way. Let accents punctuate the piece rather than dominate it. Contrast is often strongest and makes the biggest impact when it’s controlled.
Build movement through direction
Think about the direction of your marks. Repeating similar angles or flows creates cohesion, even when colours shift between dark and light.
Explore both palette knives
The square-edged knife is great for bold blocks, straight pulls and heavier areas of colour. The pointed knife allows for sharper lines, directional movement and more expressive marks. Switching between the two adds contrast and variation.
Leave room for stillness
Negative space is essential in Navy & Bright. Allow areas of raw canvas to remain untouched, they give the eye somewhere to rest and help balance stronger marks.
